Campina Grande is a municipality located in the Brazilian state of Paraiba. It was founded on 1 December 1697, having been elevated to city status on October 11, 1864. According to 2011 estimates, its population is approximately 400 000 inhabitants, being the second most populous city in ParaÃba, in addition to being the 56th largest municipality in the 12th largest inland city in Brazil. Its metropolitan area, comprising 23 municipalities, has an estimated population of 687,545 inhabitants, making it the largest metropolitan area in the interior Northeast, the fourth largest metropolitan area in the interior of Brazil, the 24th largest in Brazil and 787 th largest in the world [10].
